We are P-S-Y-C-H-E-D to introduce you to our Camper of the Week, Nicole Ryan! She is the co-host and radio personality for SiriusXM Hits 1 Morning Mashup Show and also a guest correspondent for OKTV! She has interviewed stars from Adam Levine to Miley Cyrus and Guy Fieri, and has rubbed elbows with Pharrell, Jane Lynch and Mark Cuban amongst many other A-listers… and we’re not jealous at all, right? Nicole’s own experience at summer camp has most definitely been a highlight of her childhood and impacted her professional rise in entertainment media.
Nicole went to a 4-week sleep away camp in Maine for 4 years. At camp, she was always involved in the plays and learned that she loved performing in front of an audience (no surprises there!). She grew up in Syracuse and now resides in Manhattan, NY and is bringing her big personality to a radio near you! What are your top three essentials that you packed in your trunk?
Itty bitty book light for late night reading, a camp chair for camp fires, and lots of stationary to write home!
What are three words to describe your camp experience?
Exciting, unforgettable, special.
Who was someone at camp that you looked up to?
All of my counselors, I remember wanting to be like all of them each year…like they were the coolest people I’d ever met…
Why do you think it is important to go to camp?
It teaches independence, team work and how to become a well adjusted human being ;)
How has camp influenced what you do/your career path?
I used to love to be a part of the camp shows and performances and knew early on I loved entertaining and being in front of an audience!
What is your favorite camp memory?
Color war! DUH!
Words of wisdom for current and future campers?
Push through your home sickness…it will make you a stronger person in the end and you’ll have an amazing time with life long friendships.
What is your favorite camp tradition?
Singing Taps at the end of each camp day.
What was your favorite camp food?
Bug juice.
What is your favorite camp cheer?
Boom Chicka Boom!
What is your favorite movie about camp/that you saw at camp?
Indian Summer.
What did you prefer – pool or lake?
Lake.
Sports or arts?
Arts.
Favorite canteen candy?
Charleston Chew.
Favorite / most requested item on visiting day?
Any home cooked meal from my mama!
What was your favorite camp activity?
Windsurfing.
Favorite camp memento?
All of my camp clothing and gear.
Did you ever get homesick at camp? How did you deal with that?
I cried…I wrote letters to my parents but really just had to ride that feeling like a wave and realize I was there for an amazing once in a life time experience.
